No. 35 Squadron ORB shows “Training Flight by three aircraft led by F/Lt Grannum left for Atbara, Khartoum, Kassala and Gebeit. En route, Khratoum to Kassala, sandstorm caused commander to change course and head for Atbara. Aircraft piloted by P/O Kent forced landed through lack of oil. Shortly after, F/Lt Grannum forced landed due to lack of oil. P/O Wardell, piloting third aircraft landed alongside as precautionary measure. F/Lt Grannum flew P/O Wardell’s aircraft to Atbara and obtained supplies of oil”

Flight commenced in Wadi Halfa and finished at Juba. Aircraft piloted by P/O Essam crashed at Rauyiwan, killing pilot and passengers LAC’s Read and Newton”

The AM Form 1180 (Accident Card) shows: Stalled after taking off with steep climbing turn; insufficient height to recover.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has advised that the crews remains are concentrated as follows:

Fairey Gordon K1776 was on a Ferry Flight (near Gebeit) on 27th January 1936

Its crew comprised:

The squadron’s record book shows “A ‘B’ Flight aircraft, piloted by F/Lt Connolly (Middle East Armament Officer), F/Lt Edwards and LAC Campling, crashed near Gebeit. All occupants were killed”

The AM Form 1180 (Accident Card) shows ” Clouds from 1000 to 2000ft and 5000 to 7000ft. Passed behind clouds and then came out of clouds in spin. Got out of one dive and spin and then went into another. Pilot used parachute from low height and killed. Two passengers burnt.”
